Martin Oelz

Specialist at the Working Conditions and Gender Equality Department of the International Labour Organization (ILO)

Martin Oelz is a Senior Specialist on Equality and Non-Discrimination and team leader in the Gender, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Branch at the ILO’s Conditions of Work and Equality Department. Since joining the ILO in 2001 he has held various positions related to the supervision and promotion of international labour standards, with a focus on equality and non-discrimination and conditions of work. In his current role, Mr Oelz leads research and knowledge development, policy advice, and capacity-building efforts on equality and non-discrimination issues. He serves as the ILO’s global focal point for indigenous and tribal peoples’ issues and coordinates the ILO Strategy of Action on this topic. Mr Oelz has been involved in the setting of several international labour standards, including the standards on decent work for domestic workers and on violence and harassment in the world of work. In 2022-2023 he served as head of the Secretariat for the ILO Commission of Inquiry into violations by Myanmar of the ILO forced labour and freedom of Association Conventions. From 2016-2022, Mr Oelz assumed the role as the ILO’s Ethics Officer, (part-time). Prior to joining the ILO, Mr. Oelz worked as a human rights adviser for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Austria. In this capacity, he was involved in the human rights work of the United Nations General Assembly, ECOSOC, and their subsidiary bodies. He also served as an assistant lecturer in international public law at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, where he earned a law degree in 1995. He was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to undertake postgraduate studies at the University of Notre Dame, United States of America, obtaining an LL.M. in 1996 (summa cum laude) with a specialization in international human rights law. In 2000, Martin completed his doctoral studies in international public law at the University of Innsbruck (summa cum laude).
